The annual volunteer work weekend, sponsored by the Friends of the Woodlands, requires a donation of about seven hours of work on Saturday to help prepare the three camps for the summer season. The work includes setting up tents and cots, sweeping floors, cleaning kitchens and bathrooms, as well as special outdoor projects assigned by the Woodlands Staff. We welcome people of all ages and abilities to participate. We will form a childcare cooperative based on the ages of campers.

The remainder of the time may be spent visiting with new and old friends in the beautiful redwood forest, hiking, or sunbathing at the river beaches. We’ll have group activities in the evening. There is no electricity in the cabins; however, the cabins have fireplaces. Bathrooms are located near the cabins. A light supper awaits you after your drive on Friday night. Enjoy a hot breakfast early Saturday morning and pack a sack lunch on your way to join your work party. There is a big feast Saturday night and a brunch on Sunday morning.

The site and meals are donated by the Mendocino Woodlands, so there are no registration fees for those who participate on a work detail! Each camper is expected to put in 7 hours of work on Saturday, as well as 1 hour in the dining hall. Everybody cleans up the camp before we depart on Sunday morning.

And oh, by the way, registration is FREE!

Campers will be welcome to show up as early as Wednesday, November 23 to start relaxing, preparing for the big Friday dinner, and enjoying each others company. Planned (and unplanned) activities will continue through Saturday night. On Sunday morning, we’ll clean up and head home. We have lots of exciting things planned including a holiday dance, ornament making, pie baking, a gift exchange, and plenty of surprises.

We are expecting a great turnout but there is still room for more. Please pass this on to friends that have yet to commit to coming so they can reserve their space. We have several projects we will be doing and the more people the better!

The weekend’s meals are now provided free of charge for all who participate on a work crew! Please plan to arrive anytime after 3pm on Friday May 6th. Dinner will be available between 5:30-7:30 on Friday night.

Possible Projects

  • Tent Platform building
  • Installing stairs on a couple trails in Camp 3
  • Camp 3
    • Cleaning of Dining Hall
    • Installing canvas on tents
  • Kitchen crew (cooking and dishwashing)

Please email Stephanie Anderson the following information ASAP to ensure your spot!

  • Names and number in your group
  • Approx time of arrival (will you be here for dinner Friday night?)
  • Food restrictions for all in your group
  • Cabin preference (Camp 2 is where you’ll be sleeping)
  • Any special skills so I can put you on the right project? Project preference?

This is going to be an awesome weekend! I can’t wait to see how much we get done!
